Biohazard Safety Cabinet Class 2
A Class II Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) is an enclosed, ventilated workspace for safely manipulating materials contaminated with biological agents at Biosafety Level 1, 2, or 3. It is designed to protect the user, the environment, and the product from cross-contamination. Class II BSCs are further classified into two types: Type A and Type B.
Class II Type A BSCs provide personnel and product protection, while Class II Type B BSCs provide personnel, product, and environmental protection. Both types of Class II BSCs have a negative pressure plenum around the work area, which draws air into the cabinet and prevents contaminated air from escaping.
The air in a Class II BSC is filtered through a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter before it is exhausted to the outside environment. This ensures that the air is free of harmful contaminants.
Class II BSCs are typically used in laboratories that work with biological agents that are not known to be airborne transmissible. They are also used in cleanrooms and other controlled environments where it is important to prevent cross-contamination.
When working in a Class II BSC, it is important to follow proper procedures in order to maintain the safety of the user, the environment, and the product. These procedures include:
- Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, a lab coat, and a face mask.
- Working with the sash lowered to the operating position.
- Using aseptic technique to prevent contamination.
- Decontaminating the work surface and materials before and after use.
By following these procedures, you can help to ensure the safe operation of a Class II BSC and protect yourself, the environment, and the product from cross-contamination.
In addition to the basic safety features of a Class II BSC, there are a number of optional features that can be added to enhance safety and convenience. These features include:
- An ultraviolet (UV) light to decontaminate the work surface.
- A HEPA filter on the exhaust to protect the environment.
- A timer to automatically turn off the UV light and exhaust fan.
- A remote control to operate the BSC from outside the work area.
These optional features can help to make a Class II BSC even safer and more convenient to use.
