How Do You Hang Kitchen Wall Cabinets?

Hanging kitchen wall cabinets is a crucial step in completing your kitchen remodel or renovation. While it may seem like a daunting task, it is entirely possible to DIY with the right tools, materials, and techniques. Here's a detailed guide to help you hang your kitchen wall cabinets like a pro.

Materials and Tools You'll Need

  • Wall cabinets
  • Cabinet screws
  • Laser level or carpenter's level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Stud finder
  • Clamps

Step 1: Plan and Layout

Before hanging the cabinets, carefully plan their placement and layout. Use a tape measure to determine the height from the countertop to the bottom of the cabinets. Mark these points on the wall using a pencil.

Use a laser level or carpenter's level to create a level line across the wall at the marked height. This line will serve as the reference point for hanging the cabinets.

Step 2: Mark the Mounting Holes

Measure the distance between the mounting holes on the back of the cabinets. Transfer these measurements to the wall, aligning the holes with the level line you created in Step 1.

Use a pencil to mark the center of each mounting hole on the wall.

Step 3: Locate and Mark Wall Studs

It is crucial to secure the cabinets into wall studs for maximum stability. Use a stud finder to locate the studs behind the wall and mark their positions.

If the mounting holes do not align with the studs, adjust the cabinet placement slightly or consider using toggle bolts or molly bolts to attach the cabinets to drywall.

Step 4: Install Brackets or Cleats

Most wall cabinets come with pre-drilled holes for mounting brackets or cleats. Install these brackets or cleats onto the cabinets according to the manufacturer's instructions.

If there are no pre-drilled holes, you can use a drill to create your own. Ensure that the bracket or cleat is level and securely attached to the cabinet.

Step 5: Hang the Cabinets

Lift the cabinet carefully and align the mounting brackets or cleats with the marks on the wall.

Slightly tilt the cabinet away from the wall and insert the screws into the mounting holes. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws until the cabinet is securely fastened to the wall.

Step 6: Level and Align

Once the cabinet is hung, check its levelness using a level. Adjust the screws on the mounting brackets or cleats if necessary.

Use clamps to keep the cabinets aligned with each other and with the countertop. Once they are level and aligned, tighten the screws fully.

Step 7: Install Face Frames and Doors

Once the wall cabinets are securely hung, install any face frames or doors according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Check the alignment and fit of the face frames and doors to ensure they are properly attached and do not interfere with the opening and closing of the cabinets.
