What Is Laminar Flow Cabinet
A laminar flow cabinet, also known as a clean bench or laminar flow hood, is a controlled environment workspace that maintains a constant, unidirectional flow of filtered air. It is designed to prevent contamination of sensitive materials, such as biological samples, from airborne particles and microorganisms. Laminar flow cabinets are widely used in various settings, including laboratories, hospitals, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.
Laminar flow cabinets operate by drawing air through a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which removes particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. The filtered air is then blown down vertically over the work surface in a laminar flow pattern, creating a sterile and particle-free environment. Types of Laminar Flow Cabinets
There are two main types of laminar flow cabinets:
- Class II Laminar Flow Cabinets: These cabinets are designed to protect both the user and the materials being handled. Air is drawn into the cabinet through a HEPA filter, then flows vertically over the work surface and is exhausted through another HEPA filter at the back of the cabinet.
- Class I Laminar Flow Cabinets: These cabinets are primarily designed to protect the materials being handled. Air is drawn into the cabinet through a HEPA filter, flows vertically over the work surface, and is exhausted directly into the room.
Class II laminar flow cabinets are more commonly used than Class I cabinets as they provide a higher level of protection for both the user and the materials being handled.
